State Street Investment Management today announced the launch of the SPYMX mutual fund share class. SPYMX is an institutional share class of the State Street® SPDR® Portfolio S&P 500® ETF (SPYM). Moreover, it brings one of the firm’s flagship S&P 500 strategies to the retirement and institutional markets. The company built the structure specifically for the needs of those investors.
Eligible employer-sponsored and state-sponsored retirement plans can now access SPYMX. These include 401(k) and 403(b) plans. Other eligible institutional investors can also invest in the share class. Additionally, eligible retirement plans face no investment minimum. As a result, plan sponsors of all sizes can offer participants low-cost S&P 500 exposure. Participants receive that exposure within a ’40 Act mutual fund structure.
Anna Paglia, Chief Business Officer at State Street Investment Management, explained the thinking behind the launch. “Retirement investors shouldn’t have to choose between the operational familiarity of a mutual fund and the scale and efficiency associated with an ETF,” said Anna Paglia, Chief Business Officer at State Street Investment Management. “This structure removes a longstanding vehicle constraint and represents an important step in our commitment to bring the benefits of ETF innovation to defined contribution savers.”
Why US Large-Cap Exposure Matters for Retirement Plans
US large-cap exposure typically ranks among the largest holdings in defined contribution plans. It accounts for 30% of plan assets nationwide. That share totals more than $4 trillion in assets. Notably, half of those assets sit in mutual funds.
SPYMX offers the same underlying exposure as the SPYM ETF through a shared portfolio structure. Therefore, a broad spectrum of investors can benefit from the scale and liquidity of the existing ETF. At the same time, they access the fund through a structure that aligns with retirement plan platforms and recordkeeping systems.
State Street Investment Management has been a leader in S&P 500 investing for over 30 years. That leadership can be traced back to the 1993 launch of SPY, the first ETF listed in the U.S. Its sister fund, SPYM, has been tracking the S&P 500 since 2020. SPYM gives investors another low cost way to access the index. The fund has also grown immensely, with over $170 billion in assets under management. SPYM was recently selected as the default investment in the Trump Accounts program. SPYMX is, therefore, the next evolution of that legacy. It takes the size and established investment process of SPYM and puts it into a mutual fund structure.
