Alipay+ and Mastercard Expand Global NFC Payments for Kakao Pay
Alipay+, a global wallet gateway under Ant International, has partnered with Mastercard to launch NFC payments for Kakao Pay users traveling abroad. This collaboration allows Kakao Pay customers to enjoy secure tap-to-pay experiences at millions of international merchant locations.
Through this partnership, Kakao Pay users can now make NFC payments at over 150 million Mastercard merchants worldwide. These merchants are located in regions such as Japan, Southeast Asia, the United States, Europe, and Oceania. The Alipay+ NFC solution works alongside Kakao Pay’s existing QR code and barcode-based cross-border payments. This combination enhances the travel and shopping experience for global users.
Secure and Seamless Cross-Border Payments
NFC payments let users tap their NFC-enabled Android phones on contactless POS terminals that accept Mastercard. This reduces the need to carry cash or physical cards while ensuring transaction security through advanced encryption and authentication.
The service is already available on the latest Kakao Pay app version. It will also roll out to the KakaoTalk app for Android later in September, followed by a phased release for iOS devices.
“Kakao Pay aims to provide the most convenient and rewarding payment experiences overseas,” said Seung Jun Oh, Head of Payment Group at Kakao Pay. “Our platform continues to support users at every stage of their travel journey.”
“People expect seamless and secure payment options,” added Sandeep Malhotra, Executive Vice President, Core Payments, Asia Pacific, Mastercard. He noted that these options should be integrated into trusted apps. “This partnership makes overseas payments simpler and more secure for Korean users.”
Douglas Feagin, President of Ant International, stated, “Alipay+ empowers mobile payment partners like Kakao Pay to expand globally while delivering trusted digital payment services. Together with Mastercard, we are creating a more inclusive and interoperable global payment network.”
